As a collective term, niacin refers to both forms of vitamin B3, nicotinamide and nicotinic acid. This product contains nicotinamide (also called niacinamide) and does not cause skin flushing which is associated with nicotinic acid. Vitamin B3 is required for energy production within cells, metabolism of carbohydrates, fats and proteins, proper circulation and nervous function, healthy skin and normal secretion of bile and stomach fluids. It is also necessary for the synthesis of red blood cells, steroids and sex hormones, and forms part of the glucose tolerance factor. Heavy drinkers, individuals with a poor appetite or diet, and those on a low protein diet may have an increased dietary requirement for vitamin B3. |
