In its co-enzyme form, vitamin B1 is thought to play a role in normal appetite and growth, production of hydrochloric acid in the stomach, energy release from foods, and to optimize cognitive activity, brain and nervous function. When excreted through the body sweat, it produces an odour that is thought to repel insects. Heavy drinkers, smokers, individuals with a poor appetite or diet, those on a high carbohydrate, fat or protein diet (e.g. body builders and athletes), adolescents and those with a mentally or physically demanding lifestyle may have an increased dietary requirement for vitamin B1. |
