Rhodiola (Latin - Rhodiola Rosea) is a member of the Crassulaceae plant family and is also commonly known as Artic root, golden root or rose root. It is a herbaceous perennial plant indigenous to the Arctic mountainous regions of Europe and Asia. The plant reaches up to 70cm in height and grows primarily in dry sandy ground. It produces fragrant yellow or red blossoms, and has a thick glossy rootstock which is greyish-brown in colour with a golden-yellow inner layer. Rhodiola has enjoyed centuries of traditional herbal use in Scandinavia, Siberia, Russia and other Eastern countries. In the mountain villages of Siberia, a bouquet of roots is still given to couples prior to marriage to assure a rich and beneficial marriage. For centuries the details of how and where to harvest the wild root were a closely guarded secret among certain Siberian clans. They would transport the herb down the ancient trails in the Altai and Caucasus mountains and trade it for Georgian wines, fruits, garlic and honey. Even Chinese emperors sent expeditions to Siberia to bring back this highly valued plant. The folklore surrounding rhodiola led to the first investigations in its phytochemistry in the early 1960’s by Russian scientists. The dried root of the herb is commonly used in herbal preparations. |
