Psyllium seed husks, also known as ispaghula, provides a natural source of soluble indigestible dietary fibre. Psyllium is native to Europe, North Africa and Asia and has been used for thousands of years as a source of dietary fibre. Soluble dietary fibre does not irritate the gastric lining compared to other forms of fibre, and may therefore be suitable for people with a sensitive digestive system. Dietary fibre may support liver function by helping to cleanse and detoxify heavy metals in the intestine. Fibre may also be used as part of a weight loss programme, if taken an hour before meals with plenty of water it gives a feeling of fullness, due to its bulking action. Recent research also indicates that soluble fibre may help to support a healthy cholesterol profile in the body. Modern diets may lack natural fibre as it is removed during the refining process. |
