Para amino benzoic acid (PABA) is a water-soluble, non-protein amino acid and is classed as vitamin B complex factor. It can be synthesized in the human body by intestinal bacteria and is therefore not considered as an essential nutrient. PABA helps to maintain the health of the intestinal bacteria, and is required for the production and utilization of folic acid and vitamin B5 by the intestinal bacteria. It also plays a role in the metabolism of proteins, formation of red blood cells, skin health and hair pigmentation. The healthy natural balance of intestinal bacteria may be disrupted by factors such as poor diet, use of drugs such as antibiotics and contraceptives, excess alcohol and stress. This may affect the production of PABA, folic acid and vitamin B5 in the body. |
