Ginkgo (Latin – Ginkgo Biloba) is a member of the Ginkgoaceae plant family and is also commonly known as the maidenhair tree or in China as bai guo. Ginkgo is dioecious tree, the male and female trees are separate. The odd name “ginkgo” seems to have been derived from the Japanese pronunciation of yin-kuo, Chinese for “silver apricot”, referring to the apricot-like seeds produced by the female plant. Ginkgo is a large deciduous tree indigenous to China capable of topping 30m (100ft) in height. It is an upright growing tree when young, but when older, the branches spread more laterally. The plant has unique green to yellow fan-shaped leaves, the centre of the fan is notched, dividing the leaf into two lobes inspiring the species name “biloba”, two-lobed. Ginkgo is often referred to as “a living fossil” as it has survived on earth little changed for more than 200 million years, witnessing the birth and extinction of the dinosaurs, the rise of flowering plants and mammals, and the advance and retreat of the ice ages. Since the antiquity, ginkgo has been venerated as a holy tree in China and was planted in Buddhist temple-grounds and monastic gardens. Ancient Chinese use of ginkgo can be traced back to almost 5,000 years. Numerous studies indicate that ginkgo may help to support the circulatory system. Good blood flow to the extreme parts of the body provides vital nutrients and oxygen to important organs such as the eyes and the brain, thus maintaining healthy vision and optimal mental function. Ginkgo has antioxidant properties and is rich in biofl avonoids, which are particularly important in maintaining the integrity of blood vessels. The dried leaves of the herb are commonly used in herbal preparations.
