Dong quai (Latin - Angelica Sinensis) is a member of the Apiaceous plant family and is also commonly known in China as dang gui or tang kuei. It is a sturdy aromatic perennial indigenous to China and Japan and thrives in damp mountain ravines, meadows, river banks and coastal areas. The plant has smooth, hollow purplish stems and bears umbrella-shaped clusters of greenish-white flowers and winged fruits in the summer. The yellowish-brown fleshy roots of the plant has a distinctive sweet and pungent aroma, and the Chinese often use the root as a component of soups and broths to help the nutritional attributes of these dishes. Dong quai is one of the key ingredients of “four things soup”, a famous traditional women’s culinary preparation in China. Dong quai’s use in China dates back to ancient times and it is revered as one of the most important herbs, if ginseng is known as the “King” of Chinese herbs, than dong quai is the “Queen”. The Chinese highly value dong quai and believe it may boost the “Chi energy”. The dried root of the herb is commonly used in herbal preparations. |
