Co-enzyme Q10 (Co-Q10) belongs to a family of natural substances, called ubiquinones, which are found in high amounts in the cells of the brain, heart, kidneys, liver, pancreas and muscle tissues. It plays an important role in the mitochondria, the “powerhouse” of cells, and supports their energy producing pathways, generating cellular energy to help fuel the body’s daily activity. Co-Q10 is an electron/proton carrier and helps the mitochondria to produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the body’s energy “currency”. It supports the immune system and is also a potent fat-soluble antioxidant, helping to protect the fatty tissues of the body, such as cellular membranes, against harmful free radicals. Oral supplementation may help to maintain Co-Q10 stores in crucial cells and tissues of the body. |
