Black cohosh (Latin - Cimicifuga Racemosa) is a member of the Ranunculaceae plant family and is related to the buttercup family, it is a herbaceous perennial indigenous to Canada and Eastern North America. The plant has graceful tall spires of brilliant white flowers with a black rootstock that is knotty and rough. Cohosh is a native American Indian word for rough, hence the name black cohosh. The native American Indians prized black cohosh and used it for a variety of purposes, and gave it many common names, such as squaw root, black snakeroot, rattleroot, bugbane and bugwort. The early settlers learned about black cohosh from the native Indians, and during the 19th century an alcoholic extract of the root was used as a popular botanical by the leading herbalists of the day, known as the Eclectics. Knowledge of this useful herb was passed through the Eclectics to Europe, where black cohosh remains in favor to this day. The dried root is commonly used in herbal preparations. |
