Biotin is stored in the liver and is readily produced by the intestinal bacteria of the large intestine. Biotin plays a role in the body in healthy blood sugar profile, sweat gland function, and is essential for the normal growth and development of the bone marrow, muscle, nerve, hair, skin and nail cells. It is also required for production of energy from foods and the manufacture of prostaglandins from essential fatty acids. Prostaglandins are hormone-like compounds which help to regulate many bodily functions and intracellular activity, including skin condition and cardiovascular, nervous and reproductive function. A healthy natural balance of intestinal bacteria is important for the production of biotin in the body, factors that may disrupt this balance include poor diet, use of drugs such as antibiotics and contraceptives, excess alcohol and stress. |
