Discovered in 1951, alpha lipoic acid (ALA) was found to play an important role as a co-enzyme in the Krebs cycle and in the production of cellular energy. In the late 1980’s, researcher’s realized that this remarkable co-enzyme was also a powerful sulphur-containing antioxidant. ALA is often referred to as the “universal” antioxidant as it neutralizes free radicals in both the fatty and watery parts of body cells, in contrast to vitamin C (which is water soluble) and Vitamin E (which is fat soluble). ALA is also especially effective in recycling other antioxidants back to their original state after they detoxify free radicals. Acetyl l-carnitine (ALC) occurs naturally in the brain, kidney and liver. It plays an important role in the transfer and utilization of long-chain fatty acids in the mitochondrial matrix, the “powerhouse” of cells, where they are oxidized for the production of energy. Both ALA and ALC are not normally considered as essential nutrients because the body can manufacture them, however, the natural levels of both nutrients in the body gradually diminish with age. A combination of ALA and ALC may be preferred by athletes, the elderly and generally those who wish to reduce oxidative stress, sustain performance, energy levels and optimize cognitive function. |
